Juridical order, to keep things brief and clear, is the political legal norm that societies are constructed on. (Kind of like how God gets to decide who to admit into heaven and who to cast into hell in sticking with the theme of political concepts as secularized theological principles.) Thus, the sovereign is he who has absolute control over the juridical order itself and has the power to decide who is included and who is excluded from this order. What Schmitt means by sovereignty and exception is twofold: (1) exception is a political moment when the sovereign can suspend the juridical order (the “rule of law”) in a “state of emergency” (a term more familiar to English speakers) and (2) decide who is included and (more importantly) excluded within that juridical order. Some famous names who have taken to heart and criticism Schmitt’s understanding have been: Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida, Hannah Arendt, Leo Strauss, and Giorgio Agamben to name a few. In fact, the last almost 100 years of political philosophy and critical political theory (especially in France, Germany, and Italy), have wrestled with Schmitt’s outline of sovereignty. Schmitt’s definition that the sovereign is he who decides on the exception is one of the most famous sentences of all modern political philosophy. As he famously opens, “ Sovereign is he who decides on the exception.” What exactly does this all entail? Carl Schmitt begins his essay on political theology by discussing sovereignty. Students learned proper stretching before a race and then had a blast!!ĭion has authored a picture book, middle grade chapter book, adult book, and bilingual book about Finding Gobi. Gobi went on to run 77 miles with Dion, won his heart and found himself adopted in a new family.Īuthor Dion Leonard spoke to students about his incredible true story with this one-of-a-kind stray desert dog that changed his life forever.Īfterwards, students were treated to a special physical activity with Gobi. Gobi, a scrappy little stray dog, latched onto Dion an ultramarathon runner while he was participating in a 155 mile race through the Gobi Desert. "Finding Gobi was one of the hardest things I've ever done in my life," said runner Dion Leonard. This time around, they had a special activity in store for students. International best-selling author Dion Leonard and his fluffy sidekick, Gobi, visited with Lower School students to share Finding Gobi's amazing true adventure. But if you don't, definitely get the audio book and give the first book a little bit of time. If you like reading and have the time I recommend reading this series first. He has a rather "bland" voice but is able to differentiate some of the characters so you can tell who is who. By the third book I actually enjoyed listening to him. I didn't like the narrator very much at first but he kind of grew on me. I wish someone would buy the movie rights to this series as it would make an awesome set of movies to rival the best fantasy/sci fi out there. There is no "bad language" but the themes are very much adult-oriented. This series is really meant for adults and older teens as it includes nudity and nongraphic sexuality. The last book in the series, Juxtaposition, is a roller coaster ride of increasing stakes as the hero overcomes his enemies and saves both worlds. The overall plot involving a world with two different "frames"-one of science and one of fantasy-is wonderfully done and easily justifies the three books. The dialog sometimes is a little stilted but it's a fun adventure and is great for those who aren't die-hard fantasy fans. It has one of the best plots involving science fiction and fantasy of any author in either genre. This is by far my favorite Piers Anthony Series. As he tries to piece together what has taken place, the narrative shifts to decades earlier. He searches for supplies in a wasteland where insects proliferate and pigoons and wolvogs ravage the pleeblands, where ordinary people once lived, and the Compounds that sheltered the extraordinary. When the story opens, he is sleeping in a tree, wearing an old bedsheet, mourning the loss of his beloved Oryx and his best friend Crake, and slowly starving to death. The narrator of Atwood's riveting novel calls himself Snowman. For listeners of Oryx and Crake, nothing will ever look the same again. This is Margaret Atwood at the absolute peak of her powers. Margaret Atwood’s new novel is so utterly compelling, so prescient, so relevant, so terrifyingly-all-too-likely-to-be-true, that listeners may find their view of the world forever changed after listening to it. In between we follow Qiu's protagonist into the streets of Montmartre into descriptions of affairs with both men and women, French and Taiwanese into rhapsodic musings on the works of Theodoros Angelopoulos and Andrei Tarkovsky and into wrenching and clear-eyed outlines of what it means to exist not only between cultures but, to a certainextent, between and among genders. The book opens with the death of a beloved pet rabbit and closes with a portentous expression of the narrator's resolve to kill herself. Each letter unfolds as a chapter, the narrator writing from Paris to her lover in Taipei and to family and friendsin Taiwan and Tokyo. The opening note urges us to read the letters in any order. Last Words from Montmartre, written just as Internet culture was about to explode, is also a kind of farewell to letters. Instead, this is a book about how love, passion and life can lead one to kill oneself. In a voice that veers between extremes, from self-deprecation to hubris, compulsive repetition to sublime reflection, reticence to vulnerability, it can be read as both the author's masterpiece and a labor of love, as well as her own suicide note. Last Words from Montmartre, by Qiu Miaojin Translated by Ari Larissa Heinrich. "An NYRB Classics Original Last Words from Montmartre is a novel in letters that narrates the gradual dissolution of a relationship between two lovers and, ultimately, the complete unraveling of the narrator. The dog went off growling, its tail between its legs. But when the huge dog chased little Harriet and cornered her behind the garbage can, lunging at her with open, white-toothed jaws, and Harriet with one desperate mew flew straight up into the air and over the dog's staring head and lighted on a rooftop - then Mrs. She washed those silky wings every day, along with chins and paws and tails, and wondered about them now and then, but she worked too hard finding food and bringing up the family to think much about the things she didn't understand. So the children's wings were the least of Mrs. The rats were fierce and dangerous the mice were shy and scrawny. Car wheels and trucks rolling past all day - rubbish and litter - hungry dogs - endless shoes and boots walking, running, stamping, kicking - nowhere safe and quiet, and less and less to eat. It really was a terrible neighborhood, and getting worse. They were beautiful children, well brought up. How is the milk this morning, children?" "It's very good, Mother, thank you," they answered happily. Harriet, when you purr, you should close your eyes part way and knead me with your front paws yes, that's the way. "Maybe they have wings because I dreamed, before they were born, that I could fly away from this neighborhood," said Mrs. "I suppose their father was a fly-by-night," a neighbor said, and laughed unpleasantly, sneaking round the dumpster. Mrs Jane Tabby could not explain why all four of her children had wings. While this isn’t necessarily the worst thing, it does make finding the best yoga pants a challenge-that’s where we come in. Whether you prefer your yoga pants hiked up in a high rise, fancy a mid-rise waistband, or like the option to adjust the style and go for a more low-rise look, there are plenty of yoga pants to choose from that meet nearly every style preference, too. You can find this beloved workout clothing item in a variety of pants styles, including flare, bootcut, wide leg, and even capri and jogger styles, too. Often mistaken for leggings, yoga pants can have a similar look and feel to a cotton blend legging, but they don’t just come in form-fitting silhouettes. Stretchy, soft, and durable, yoga pants are one of the most frequently worn athleisure items in our wardrobe (even when we aren’t actually planning to take a yoga class). |
