They gave me MacArthur and Kapitan Sino by Bob Ong. It would have been easy for them to think of a gift for me since they know I love to read, but I said “anything in Tagalog” - since I read mostly in English, yet I believe in Philippine culture. So when the July birthdays came up, one of my team members asked me what I wanted as a gift. We were a tight-knit group and we celebrated each others’ birthdays. Especially as technology gets better at understanding humans, you might increasingly find yourself serving it, instead of it serving you. But if you don’t know what you want in life, it will be all too easy for technology to shape your aims for you and take control of your life. If you know what you want in life, technology can help you get it. Most people found themselves working from sunrise till sunset plucking weeds, carrying water buckets and harvesting corn under a blazing sun. Thousands of years ago humans invented agriculture, but this technology enriched just a tiny elite, while enslaving the majority of humans.
